Instructions:

 Note: Instructions to create the identity tree, lesson information, and all video resources are attached to this assignment sheet at the end of the document. I will be the only one with access to this assignment but only write as much as you are comfortable with. You should still be critically analyzing yourself and discussing your discoveries as honestly as you can. This assignment does not judge what you have written, but how you can apply what you’ve learned so far to the materials we have engaged with.

 Using the identity tree we created together in class reflect upon it using at least 2 of the videos that we also watched together in class. I encourage you to relax and watch them again on your own time and take it in. It’ll be worth it, I promise! They’re incredible videos that can give us great insight into ourselves and one another!

 

You must answer the questions in paragraph format, however, you can write it in an informal essay format or in proper paragraphs answering the questions. It’s up to you!

 

Answer the following questions within your piece:

 

  1. Reflecting upon your tree, what do you notice about your journey to this point? Where have you been and where do you see yourself in the future?
  2. Reflecting upon your tree, what parts of your identity are the most important to you? What intersections makeup “you” and why are those important to consider when we are doing social science research? Give an example.
  3. What levels of culture can you identify that you are part of in each of the 3 levels, based on what is on your identity tree? (see lesson)
  4. Comparing the 2 videos you chose, what ideas and themes connect? How did you personally connect to these two videos?
  5. Thinking about the 2 videos you selected and your identity tree, what resonates with different parts of the tree (roots, trunk and branches/canopy)? For example, where can you see the danger of a single story in your past or present? How can empathy get you to where you want to be in the future? How has loneliness affected your life or how has your view of loneliness changed in terms of yourself or since viewing this video?
  6. What are the most important lessons that you have taken from the videos and your identity tree? How might your present and future be affected by these important learnings?

Assignment requirements:

  • 2 – 3 pages maximum
  • 12 point font
  • Double-spaced
  • Bibliography (not including slideshow)
  • Proper sentence and paragraph structure
  • Sincere reflection but only share as much as you are comfortable with
  • 2 videos used (your choice)
    • Let me know what videos you chose in the paper
  • Identity tree completed and discussed (can be included in the assignment if you want or you can just discuss it. It is your choice)
  • Connection to the material we have covered so far (attached below and on the google classroom post)

Requirements for the identity tree:

 

Materials needed: Paper, colored markers/pencils/pens, etc. or a digital program of some kind

 

Step 1. Draw a large tree

Step 2. the ROOTS should have where you are from, what you have learned from the people around you, and your experiences as a child. What are the important norms and values you learned as a kid?

Step 3. The TRUNK of the tree should have who you are today; what you you believe in? Who have you become? What do you care about? What is important to your identity?

Step 4. the BRANCHES or CANOPY of the tree should look towards the future; who do you want to become? What do you want to learn? What are you looking forward to?

Your tree can have things you agree with or disagree with, there are no wrong answers it’s up to you!
