Overview

Ethical behavior is crucial in the nursing profession. This assignment will pose a scenario allowing you to discuss and pose a solution to the problem.

Scenario

Mr. B is a 46 year old male admitted to the orthopedic unit following a femur fracture after a MVA accident. He has a past medical history of hypertension and depression, as well as alcohol use/abuse. He is on CIWA (alcohol withdrawal scale) precautions even though he did not have an elevated blood alcohol at the time of the accident. He complains of significant pain most of the time and requests his medication Dilaudid 2 mgs IV every 3 hours. On re-evaluation the pain does not seem to be responsive to the medication and he is asking for the dose to be increased. The nurse calls the doctor to make the request. The doctor states he thinks the patient is being manipulative and is exhibiting drug seeking behavior. The physician orders 10ml saline flush IVP “placebo” to be given as needed every 2 hours for break through complaints of pain.
