Research Proposal Assignment
This assignment requires that you develop a proposal and outline for the research paper. The
following guidelines are to be strictly adhered to in this assignment.
The research proposal, of course, must be typed and include a cover page and bibliography of materials
which may be used in the paper
1. Include a title page. The title should reflect the proposed content of the paper.
2. The assignment must be typed, double spaced, with 1 inch margins. THE USE OF HEADINGS IS
REQUIRED FOR THE MAJOR SECTIONS OF YOUR PAPER.
3. The first section of your proposal will provide an Introduction and Statement of Purpose of the proposed
research. Address the following in the statement of purpose section of your proposal: What is the purpose of
your research? What is/are the major research question(s) that will be addressed? (Formulate a major
“Why” or “How” question and specify any additional related sub-questions.) Why is your research
significant? Be thorough and complete in responding to each of these points in your proposal.
4. Develop a brief statement about the methodology you will be using to carry out the research. In this
section of the proposal, you are to identify the specific steps that you will take to carry out the research, i.e.,
the steps you will take to address the research question(s) raised.
5. Begin now to think about the construction and writing of the Review of the Literature section of your
research paper. Also, suggested, but not required at the proposal stage, in this section, you must
systematically discuss relevant scholarly literature that serves to inform your investigation. Your literature
review must include work from the peer reviewed journals and scholarly books. A minimum of six (6)
scholarly journal articles (a book can substitute for one of the articles) must be included in your review of the
literature. Specifically, what is the importance of these works to your research and how will your research
contribute to the existing body of literature? Make sure that your literature review is focused and systematic.
To assist you with the preparation of this part of your proposal, be sure to read the handouts on “Doing
a Review of Literature” which is posted on Blackboard under “Course Documents”.
6. The final section of the proposal (required) will present a topic outline. The outline should indicate, in
order and focus of the major sections addressed in your paper (in addition to the Introduction and Statement
of Purpose and Review of the Literature sections).
7. Finally, the research proposal must include a bibliography or references (depending upon the style used).
All proposals must conform to the standards of MLA, APA, or Turabian.
A Few Suggested Research Topics
Your research paper can focus virtually on any topic or subject related to the politics of the U.S. civil
rights movement. For the sake of “new learning,” you are asked to select a research topic that will be
informative, significant, and challenging. I ask that you avoid doing a research paper on popularly
known figures of the era of Civil Rights such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Emmitt Till, and
the like. Obviously, I’m not belittling the significance of these individual’s contributions. The fact is
that most of us already possess some knowledge about these leaders, so again, I ask you to move
beyond the “obvious” and dig a little deeper.
As you begin to think about a topic for research, be sure to decide on the question of “unit of
analysis.” Unit of analysis deals with the level at which your research will be focused. For example,
will you concentrate on an individual, a group or organization, a city, a state or several states, e.g.,
the South, etc.? Addressing this question will help you to develop a consistent focus.
Below are some possible topics for you to consider. You will need to refine and focus your
research in these areas by developing a clear statement of purpose, and laying out the specific
research questions you will address.
1. Research the emergence, nature and impact of the CRM in a specific state. Aldon Morris
points out that the CRM was not a holistic movement; rather, it emerged at different times in
different places, with different results. Also, the motivations at the local level may have been
distinct.
2. The role and influence of women in the Movement.
3. The role and influence of whites in the CRM.
4. Explore the involvement and influence of Jewish Americans in the Civil Rights Movement.
5. Conduct a comparative study of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and the movement against
Apartheid in South Africa. A comparative study is a viable consideration
6. A comparative study of the similarities and differences between King and Nelson Mandela.
7. An examination of Ghandi’s influence on the tactics and strategies of the CRM.
8. The influence of the CRM on contemporary movements such as the Chicano Movement and
the GLBTQ movement.
9. Overcoming racial repression and subordination in the rural South
10. African American soldiers and their impact on civil rights in the eras of World War II and
Vietnam.
11. The role and influence of Black music on the CRM.
12. The international/global effects of the Civil Rights Movement.
13. Black nationalism as ideology, and its impact on the CRM.
14. An examination of desegregation in Virginia, or anywhere else of significance for that
matter.
15. Investigate the role and influence of Senator Henry Marsh of Virginia on the Civil Rights
Movement and Virginia politics. He is currently a member of the VA Senate and served as
the first African American mayor of the city of Richmond, VA. It might be interesting to
look at his mayoral campaign, for example, to uncover how the CRM helped to propel his
candidacy.
. I suggest that you begin by identifying a broad or a very general topic area and then
zero in on a specific concern within that broad context. I think it’s useful if you can
conceptualize the research process as a funnel. That is to say, we begin with a broad or
general idea. In terms of our research focus, we proceed by narrowing down and
becoming very specific in terms of what we intend to tackle on a given project. Next,
formulate very clear and concise questions, and in fact, you might have only a single
research question. More often than not, however, one develops a series of related
research questions, and quite often, these questions seek descriptions and
explanations of the phenomenon under investigation. Just in the way of the reminder,
you will be working on a computer. Be sure to back up your work regularly while you are
writing. Invariably, things happen, and I know because things happen to me. But of
course, I try to protect against these kinds of fatalities. In preparing for the proposal, as I
have already noted, considering the fact you are in fact beginning to work on your
research paper.
One of the issues you need to consider is unit of analysis. Unit of analysis refers to the
smallest element we are studying and about which we wish to generalize. unit your
research will be focusing upon. Your research, for example, can focus upon an
individual, and study for example, the role or influence of the individual in the civil rights
movement. We can also circumscribe our study to a particular locality or city, or to a
particular state. We can do a case study, for example, of a particular locality or a case
study pertaining to a particular state. Sometimes the issues which we wish to focus on
are issues that are focused on the federal level. That is to say, they deal with or focus
upon national concerns. We might be interested in looking at a particular group, or a
particular organization. So once again unit of analysis is something you need to
consider on the front end of your work. This will help you begin to focus your research
questions.
Moving to the next point. Why is your research significant? In other words, what is the
importance of the work you propose to do. In particular what is the importance of the
work you that propose to do for public policy, African American politics, the role or
function of, for example, interest groups in American society? Now, we may opt to
perform a number of different type of studies or employ a variety of analytical
techniques, including the case study approach, comparative analysis, evaluation
research, historical research and existing data research.
Comparative analysis is research which is involved with conducting comparisons
between and/or among two or more phenomena. Now, of necessity, if one is going to
conduct a comparative analysis. It is imperative that they for example, identify the
specific dimensions along which the comparisons will be made. In this way we are
beginning to systematically think about what we are doing.
Secondly, case study analysis. Case study analysis, of course is the intensive study or
intensive investigation of the occurrence of a single phenomenon. Intensive certainly is
a very operative word in that statement. But once again, a case study analysis ought to
be systematically thought out, it must be systematically focused.
Evaluation research is yet another kind of study one might decide to conduct. If you
decide to conduct an evaluation study or do or conduct evaluation research begin by
looking at the goals of a particular organization. That is to say what that organization or
group itself has defined as its mission. It is from their self-defined vantage point that we
ought to begin to assess the extent or degree to which a particular organization or group
has achieved its goals, its stated goals, its planed goals and objectives. I make that
statement due to the fact that it would be unfair and misleading to conduct evaluation
research on any other basis. Organizations and groups must be evaluated on the basis
of the missions and goals which they themselves laid out.
Historical research. All of you will be involved in the conduct of historical research to
one degree or other. This will certainly be important to your work, especially in light of
fact that historical research will go a long way in helping to lay out the context for your
work.
Content analysis is another analytic or research technique which is very often employed
in social science research. Content analysis entails the intensive, and
sytematic investigation of written documents. Let’s say the New York Times, on a
particular subject. Our examination of the content of the New York Times on a particular
subject would necessarily need to be laid out very systematically, etc. For example, we
might evaluate certain articles based on identified themes or the number of times
certain words appear. In terms of this course I don’t expect anyone would have the time
to perform a content analysis but I think some of the techniques associated with the
utilization of this approach can be very helpful in the research that you are performing in
this class.
Finally, I want to note existing data research. Most of you once again will be involved in
the utilization of existing data. So this involves pretty much exactly what it states, the
utilization of existing data. Existing data is data which has been generated by others
and made available in the public domain of use. Certainly this is legitimate, however,
one of the things you need to be very careful of is citing those who have provided you
with vital data and information. And finally note that the methods briefly outlined here
are often used in combination with one another as opposed to singularly. For example,
you might employ comparative analysis, historical research and existing data research.
Some of the broad areas which has been investigated in the past include, for example,
the influence of the civil rights movement, in specific locales and the impact of a
particular social group on the civil rights movement. For example, the impact of women,
the impact of students, comparative studies of the civil rights movement with other
social movements worldwide. I’ve seen one study which sought to compare the civil
rights movement in the United States with the anti-Apartheid movement which of course
led to the decline of the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Fourth, various case studies
of prominent leaders and organizations have been done by students. Fifthly, the impact
of organizations and groups. Once again, one approach to the study organization and
groups might be evaluation research. Please submit your proposal by the due date
indicated in the course syllabus. All proposals must include the following major sections.
It is not noted here but first of all your proposal must have a cover page which includes
a title which will be as descriptive as possible of the content of your paper. You should
have an introduction and this should include a general statement of the topic, including
a clear statement of purpose. State the purpose of your research including the specific
research questions you intend to address. And state these explicitly. Also, provide a
statement of the significant of research. Methodology is also critical and must be
addressed in your proposal. Methodology entails the specific steps, techniques and
approaches you will use to carry out your research.
