1. Lonesome Dove is a novel that includes people of many different races – white, black,
Mexican, Indian, Irish, etc. For this essay, pick a group and discuss how they are
portrayed in the novel. Additionally, you will need to research what life was like for your
group in late 1800s Texas (or the West in general). Does the way they are depicted in the
novel mirror the historical information you uncover? How does the historical information
you find change the way we should read the novel?
2. How did McMurtry depict the Native Americans of this time period? After doing
research on the Native Americans of this era (1860s), write an essay in which you
compare McMurtry’s depiction to the historical record.
3. How does this novel show the brutality of settling the West? After researching settlers of
this time period (sodbusters, for example), write an essay in which you argue whether or
