Low Self Control Crime Theory Paper I will provide you with the crime and the sources and the infographic. All the information is attached. 12pt. font, APA in text and in a reference section citation. Section 1: Identifying a crime-related issue problem (est. .5-1 page + infographic)
•
•
Identify a specific type of crime or crime-related issue and WHY you selected this particular
problem to analyze. In other words, what made you interested in this particular issue? Also, who
is impacted by this crime or crime-related issue (consider individuals who are impacted, family
members, communities, or even society more broadly)?
Research your identified crime-related issue and provide a written summary of statistics and/or
research findings. This is meant to provide the reader with a general understanding about the
scope and nature of the crime issue you identified and should include:
o Written summary of data or research findings conveying 3 facts or important pieces of
information about this crime-related issue. All information sources should be cited intext and in a reference section at the end of the packet (APA format). You should use at
least two separate information sources such as research studies (one of which can be a
research study used in section 2), websites from organizations that study this crime
problem, etc. for this section.
o An “infographic” that depicts those 3 research findings or pieces of data in a visual,
simplistic way. An infographic should be mostly visual with very few words.
Section 2: Theoretical Framework (est: 1.5-2.5 pages)
•
•
Briefly summarize the main tenets of the theory (in other words, how does the theory explain
criminal behavior) and indicate whether the theory is focused on individual-level attributes or
processes (ex. Self-control, social control), more focused on structural or environmental
characteristics or processes (ex. Social disorganization theory), or somewhere in-between (strain
theories) or more focused on social interaction (learning, labeling). Finally, based on the theory
you selected and its explanation for why people commit crime, how would criminal behavior be
successfully prevented or reduced?
Provide citations and summaries on findings from two research studies (3 if working as partners)
that use your chosen criminological theory to explain outcomes related to the crimerelated
problem you selected. Citations should be in APA format and be included both in-text (within
your summaries) and in a combined reference section at the end of the project packet.
Summaries for each study should be 1-2 paragraphs and provide an overview of the study’s
methodology (how did they test your theory and its relationship to the crime issue) and findings.
Section 3: Overview and analysis of existing programs or policies (est. 2-3 pages)
•
Research three existing programs (5 if working as partners) or policies that are meant to address
the crime-related issue you identified in section one. Provide 1-2 paragraph summaries on each
of the three programs that includes the population the program is directed towards (adults,
kids, specific communities, returning citizens, etc.) and the types of activities, resources, or
services the program/policy provides. Be sure to include the URL for each program’s website or
the information source you used to learn about the program. Keep in mind that programs or
policies may not explicitly state they are trying to address a specific crime-related issue.
•
Therefore, it is up to you to assess (and demonstrate in your summary) whether the program
does impact the crime-issue you selected.
Select ONE of the programs or policies you reviewed and analyze the program using the
theoretical framework you identified in section two by addressing the following items:
o Based on your theory’s explanation for why people engage in crime, evaluate whether
you believe the program or policy would effectively address the crimerelated issue you
identified. Provide specific examples or rationale for your opinion in your evaluation.
o Provide THREE specific recommendations (four if working as partners) for reforms,
improvements, or expansions to the program that you believe would make it more
effective at addressing the crime-related issue you suggested. The recommendations do
not have to be major program overhauls and it is perfectly fine to suggest minor
adjustments to the resources, programs, clientele, etc. of the program. You are also
welcome to “borrow” aspects of the other programs you summarized that you think
could successfully be incorporated into the program you are evaluating. The key is that
you explain WHY you made your recommendations, using your theoretical framework
to support your arguments of why you believe those recommendations would make the
program more effective at addressing the crime-related issue.
