Li Zhenan
MSc TIP English, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
The relationship between technopreneurship and innovation is close. Especially in the
Internet era, innovation, as one of the core driving forces of social development, leads to many
opportunities for technopreneurship. As an undergraduate majoring in Communication, I am
really interested in the field of media and innovation since I have been exposed to various
kinds of media knowledge and Internet enterprise news and engaged in many relative social
practices and researches for the past three years. In sight of the intricacies embedded in
technopreneurship and innovation, I reckon it a necessity to pursue more professional and
further education in this field.
At Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, I have acquired the fundamentals of media and
communication, which broaden my horizons and let me better understand the world.
“Cultural Creativity and Marketing,” “Intercultural Communication,” and “Introduction to
Popular Culture” have nourished in me a general understanding of the complexity of culture,
foregrounded the creative and culturally sensitive natures of culture and led me to recognize
the importance of innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities in this field. High scores
achieved in media studies, news writing, editing, and release courses are proof of my solid
critical thinking, reasoning, writing and skills. Besides, teachings of “3D Printing Technology
and the Future,” “Operations of International Trade,” “Transgenic Organism and the
Contemporary Life” revealed to me the fun and challenges intrinsic to the technology and
economy in the global innovation and entrepreneurship boom, and the high scores of these
courses also proved my ability to learn across disciplines.
During my undergraduate study, one of my special academic interests rests on the innovation
of TV programs and the influences of media contents upon the audience. For instance, I
investigated the features of I Am the Actor—a popular TV variety show focusing on the art of
acting in China last year—and composed an essay (Journal of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University,
2019, 42 (5), pp. 109-27) on the value diffusion mechanism of this show. Variety shows in
China today, more often than not, are short of innovation in the content and feature excessive
entertaining elements, or to put it simply, “funniness.” As I perceive it, this trend is resulted
from TV producers’ inclination to align with the audience’ preferences, which is not wrong in
its nature but would certainly lead to the weakening or even the absence of the value guiding
function of media contents. However, I Am the Actor is unique, as it has made innovations in
the content and form of the program, provoked and nourished the audience’s aesthetic tastes
and the ability to appreciate and learn from variety shows that go beyond being merely
laughable.
Besides, one of the emerging shopping strategy platform, Xiaohongshu App, has attracted a
total of over 200million female users. On this platform, silent consumers are transformed into
active influencers who motivate other consumers in the form of sharing personal consumptive
preferences. While problems exist in its operation mode, I contended in my essay (New Media
Research, 2019, 10, pp 87-90) that it is a leading figure in that it brings to users the sense of
belonging and ownership, which would contribute remarkably to the sustainable creativity
and vigour for the online community. Recently, I completed an essay on the amelioration of the
sense of social responsibility within the media industry, which has been accepted by the 2019
SJTU-ICA International New Media Forum. These studies have enlightened me to see that
media practitioners should always keep in mind their sense of social responsibility in sight of
the immeasurable influence of communication, and that they should reflect upon people’s
innermost needs and create heartening contents that reflects their true thinking and connect
with them on a deeper level.
Academic study aside, I have accumulated hands-on practice in several internships. I worked
as an Intern Reporter for Dongyang Radio and TV Station, where I was appalled by the wide
existence of fake news especially in county-level organs. This internship also drew my
attention to the innovative efforts made by some county-level TV stations: they introduced
specially designed TV programmes to supervise governmental agencies, which attained
fruitful results in amending inefficiency problems in local governance. It made me realize the
importance of innovation in practice and enhanced my consciousness of innovation. My most
recent internship at the Press Publication, Radio, Film and Television Review Centre further
drove me to refine my news writing and editing skills and internalize the high standards of the
media industry in the reality.
In my spare time, I actively participated in microfilm projects to mirror social issues, e.g. Fame
on the living conditions of female celebrities, and Homeward Journey on “Pyramid Scheme.”
My technical skills, e.g. footage editing and plot restructuring, have been refined in the process.
As the president of the Neverland Film Association at ZSTU, I have also spearheaded and
organized the “Asymptote” China’s New-Realism Film Exhibition, as an effort to attract
students’ attention to social problems such as sexual harassment and child abuse. What’s
more, I also participated in the College Students’ “Internet Plus” Innovation and
Entrepreneurship Competition and won the Bronze Prize. During this competition, I actively
participated in every part of the competition and had a basic understanding of
entrepreneurship. Through this competition, I can strongly feel my great passion for
entrepreneurship and hope to start up business in the near future.
In retrospect, my education and experience have enhanced my faith to pursue a career in the
field of media and innovation. With the rapid development of the digital media, more people
have access to digital media, especially children. However, emergency of digital media brings
many problems, such as information leakage, network violence and information redundancy.
These problems are particularly serious in developing countries, such as China. Therefore,
how to cultivate the media literacy of netizens and make more effective use of digital media to
help their study and work is a serious social issue. At present, as an Internet power, China is
attaching more importance to Internet governance, in which Internet education is key part,
which means there are many developing opportunities in this area. Actually, I intend to seek
entrepreneurial opportunities in the innovation direction of digital media education. Right
now, my idea is to start up a company that works with schools develop children’s media
literacy, teach them digital media tools and identify effective information. Having mastered a
great deal of knowledge in media and communication, Iam eager to learn more knowledge of
technopreneurship and innovation, which would benefit a lot in my long-term career
development.
Having this vision in mind, I am applying for your university, a finest higher higher education
institute globally. MSc TIP program fully satisfies my need for its wide coverage of core
theories and up-to-date practice. This programme foregrounds essential knowledge of
technopreneurship and innovation and would equip me with advanced quality and
competence in the process of entrepreneurship. “Entrepreneurial Marketing and Business
Development,” “Managing Growing Ventures,” “Technopreneurship Challenge” would enrich
my mind and arm me with the expertise indispensable to the realization of my career goal. In
closing, I would like to reiterate my passion for your programme and your university and I
sincerely hope to join your vibrant community.
