Typing Template for APA Papers: A Sample of Proper Formatting for the APA 6th Edition
This is an electronic template for papers written in APA style (American Psychological
Association, 2010). The purpose of the template is to help the student set the margins and
spacing. Margins are set at 1 inch for top, bottom, left, and right. The type is left-justified only—
that means the left margin is straight, but the right margin is ragged. Each paragraph is indented
five spaces. It is best to use the tab key to indent. The line spacing is double throughout the
paper, even on the reference page. One space is used after punctuation at the end of sentences.
The font style used in this template is Times New Roman and the font size is 12.
First Heading
The heading above would be used if you want to have your paper divided into sections
based on content. This is the first level of heading, and it is centered and bolded with each word
of four letters or more capitalized. The heading should be a short descriptor of the section. Note
that not all papers will have headings or subheadings in them.
First Subheading
The subheading above would be used if there are several sections within the topic labeled
in a heading. The subheading is flush left and bolded, with each word of four letters or more
capitalized.
Second Subheading
APA dictates that you should avoid having only one subsection heading and subsection
within a section. In other words, use at least two subheadings under a main heading, or do not
use any at all.
When you are ready to write, and after having read these instructions completely, you can
delete these directions and start typing. The formatting should stay the same. However, one item
SOCIAL ISSUES ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE
3
that you will have to change is the page header, which is placed at the top of each page along
with the page number. The words included in the page header should be reflective of the title of
your paper, so that if the pages are intermixed with other papers they will be identifiable. When
using Word 2003, double click on the words in the page header. This should enable you to edit
the words. You should not have to edit the page numbers.
In addition to spacing, APA style includes a special way of citing resource articles. See
the APA manual for specifics regarding in-text citations. The APA manual also discusses the
desired tone of writing, grammar, punctuation, formatting for numbers, and a variety of other
important topics. Although the APA style rules are used in this template, the purpose of the
template is only to demonstrate spacing and the general parts of the paper. The student will need
to refer to the APA manual for other format directions. GCU has prepared an APA Style Guide
available in the Student Writing Center for additional help in correctly formatting according to
APA style.
The reference list should appear at the end of a paper (see the next page). It provides the
information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the
paper. Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry
in the reference list must be cited in your text. A sample reference page is included below; this
page includes examples of how to format different reference types (e.g., books, journal articles,
information from a website). The examples on the following page include examples taken
directly from the APA manual.

SOCIAL FALLACIES

Research an advocate (individual or organization) that promotes a relevant social issue.
Identify the organization and explain the relevancy of the social issue.
In my research, I chose Nancy Advocates. Nancy, a BSW-lever social works in a nation
that acknowledges and gives licenses to MSW-level clinical social workers by having them
completed at least two years in practice at any clinic under supervision. These licenses enable the
clinical social work to work or enter into private practice with private individuals and their
families, getting their payments through the companies insuring the customers, and even from
other supports. But the BSW and MSW social workers have limited certification issuing since
they have no permanent clients and capital.
In the case of Nancy, most organizations do not inquire about a proof certificate or degree
during the employment of an individual in a nonclinical place. These mean that everyone holding
a degree certificate can refer himself as a social worker. Some of the people in her nation who
see themselves as social workers include psychology, criminal justice, historians, and sociology
professionals. Due to this reason, most of the people of the nation identify themselves as social
workers knowing that it’s a generic name. These make Nancy wonder how nonprofessionals can
perform the job having no education. So, she sees that it causes harm to the individuals served by
such social workers.
Therefore, the situation makes Nancy meditate and act as an advocate. It’s because she
wants people on the nation to get or obtain better services from competent social workers. Nancy
works on the National Association of Social Workers together as the local social worker trainer
to implement a state law that will protect the social workers as well as the certificates issuing
program. She gives the reasons as to why every social worker in the community should have
adequate education and training on her position in the state. The relevance of the advocacy

requires impacting a particular group of individuals to encompass needs related to social workers
— leaders promotion of human dignity and excellent been of every individual of the nation over
a given period. The developments include employments, equality before courts of law, quality
education, and equal promotion.
Show the steps you took to translate the position/argument you researched into a clear,
logical form by writing out the logical premises and conclusions from the material
presented by the advocate.
Premises refer to the statements made during an argument giving a reason for accepting
the conclusion made (Copi et al 2016). An outcome can get defined as a single statement
presented by the arguer to convince the listener or the reader. The logical premises include:
1. Social workers by profession significantly have a difference with other people in helping
businesses since they offer the best of their knowledge to the community. They advocate on the
activities that help people improve on their lives, provide peaceful environments, and bring
around social justice. It’s achieved by promoting the rights of an individual, giving the
opportunities equally, and promoting human dignity.
2. Social workers promote social justice by working together with little social groups and
economic groups. These help to protect disadvantaged people in society, women, older adults,
young children, and even people with mental disabilities.
3. The social worker helps in changing some behavior in families that require a change through
case advocacy. It’s because they have the capability and knowledge to handle situations more
than other individuals (Padgett, 2016).
4. Social workers perform their duties aiming to meet individual or client needs but not their own
needs. Through their performance, the client gets able to obtain a good life and requirements for

survival. They include water, food, shelter, medical care, and sanitation. Also, they provide
relative needs such as goods and services that help to promote human dignity and well-being of
an individual.
The conclusion of the argument it’s that the only qualified and trained social worker with
the equivalent certificate should get issued with a license to perform the task.
Identify a minimum of five informal fallacies that are made by the advocate. Explain the
fallacies themselves and how each functions.
Fallacies refer to human beliefs wrongly taken according to no trustworthy arguments
(Van Eemeren et al 2016). Some of the informal mistakes by Nancy include;
1. Client self-determination: the principle that allows consumers of service to decide and choose
it according to their will. By promoting the law, the clients will have reduced issues on their
differences with the social workers.
2. Self-interest and advocacy: a social worker should bear in mind that he needs to help the
clients to their satisfaction but not to his satisfaction. Therefore, before getting into the field of
study, he should first get ready to help others. These help in solving the problems without having
hope on personal benefits.
3. Individual interests: it refers to the achievements made by the social worker. Every social
worker should work hard to make him happy with the work he performs.
4. Community benefit: the community should be able to rely on individual working in society as
a social worker. Every social worker should work hard to make himself an advantage to the
organization.
SOCIAL FALLACIES
5. Pathways to community benefits: a social worker should advocate for a path that helps the
society to attain better resources and services. Through building places for the clients to access
resources within themselves and the communities creates significant participation in the nation.
