The non-militant group is the Harakat Al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen which is an Islamic group. It
was established in 2006 and the group calls itself “Al- Shabaab” and it is based in East Africa.
They are mainly located in Somalia from the Somali community. They are organized in subclans and clans. The Al-Shabaab operates in rural areas where they take control of large parts of
the rural areas in Somalia. The leader of the group is known as the Ahmad Umar. The AlShabaab group operates in Somalia and in northeastern parts of Kenya. The group consists of
about 7000- 9000 militants1.
The objective of the Al-Shabaab is to “establish an Islamic state in the Horn of Africa based on
Sharia law and the elimination of secular and foreign influence, including through violent
means.” The group gets support from a terrorist group of Al- Qaeda and book haram. They are
all Islamic groups that fight for Islamic governments using force. The Al-Shabaab group obtains
funds from the illegal charcoal production which is exported. They also tax local businesses and
populations.
The Al-Shabaab terrorist group tried to overthrow the Somalia government to have control of the
entire country. They have been using violence through bombing attacks various gatherings of the
people. They have been killing people in buses, hotels, schools, and churches by the use of guns.
They assassinate those who go against them leading to more killings in the region. The terrorists
have also been kidnapping and ask for money for the release of those who are kidnapped. They
use violence against the Somalia soldiers and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISON)

They use force because the Somalia government is against terrorism. Secondly, they are not able
to raise enough funds which could support their terrorists’ activities. Therefore they need to use
violence to acquire finances and properties by force. The AMASON is also very strong and it
leads to more killings for the Al-Shabaab members enabling them to fight back. Some of the
activities which are operated by the Al- Shabaab is operating the radio of Andulus. They also
recruit young people from the region and outside Somalia who are paid to carry out various
attacks in different regions. They also use pirates to forceful fully get acquire funds from ships in
the Indian Ocean. They also prosecute Christians by cutting their heads and placing them near to
the bibles2.
The Al-Shabaab controls the Islamic religion in the regions in which they operate. This is to
enable people to be well rooted in Islamic. They remind the people in those regions to go for
their prayers. They help the community by opening up the Madras where the children are taught
about the Quran. This enables the children to learn how to defeat the Islamic religion preparing
them for war. They are also involved in the leadership of the regions in which they are in control
whereby they collect taxes from the businesses. This supports their operations and purchasing of
the weapons1.
