U.S. History
Research/Writing Assignment
Colonization
The events of history are made by individuals. While many times the big names
or famous leaders get the attention, it is the regular common people who live out the
events. With that idea in mind your assignment is to take an individual who migrated to
America during a specific time period between1607-1753 and create a fictitious
account/journal based upon research with emphasis on primary documents (letters,
memoirs, diaries, or accounts from the time period). The journal should outline what
everyday life would have been like, significant events, people, and issues that would have
been prevalent in the assigned time and place, and how they fit into the overall history of
the colonies. The timeframe of the journal should cover at least one year but not exceed
beyond the colonization period average lifespan of an individual. The frequency and
style of entries is completely up to you; however, there must be included within the text
citations to sources used that provided the insight for your accounts. Your account
should not a recreation of a famous individual. It needs to be someone that you create
that fits accurately the time period and in line with the information of how life would be
during that time for an everyday person. Be creative but accurate with the facts and
events that you weave into the account that demonstrate you understand what that period
of history was actually like.
The paper is to be 4-6 typed and double-spaced pages in length and must contain
a formal title page, and a works cited page. In addition, students must use some type of
internal citation within the text of the paper. Any accepted citation style may be used
(MLA, APA, Turabian etc.) At least five sources should be included of which there
should be a blend of first person accounts, articles, newspapers, journals, and books with
no less than two of the sources being primary sources (These can include letters and
accounts assigned in class). The margins of the paper should be set at 1”. All proper
rules of structure and grammar should be applied to the paper. If you use any types of
images or other items to enhance your paper, you must make sure to include where you
obtained those in your list of sources. Also, be sure to proofread carefully.
The assignment is worth a total of 122 pts.
