Capstone Project Required Content Overview
The final Capstone Project is completed throughout the course through the weekly
written assignments. However, not all of the assignments will be a part of the final
project—some are preparation assignments. You will compile your paper using the APA
Course Paper Format Template provided in the course Resources for Week 10. Follow
these instructions and you will have the content needed for the final project.
The first section of the paper is the Introduction (1–2 paragraphs). You will need to
create an introduction for the paper that explains what the paper will be about. You may
be able to use parts of the Week 2 Assignment for this.
The second section of the paper is entitled Problem Statement (1–2 pages). This is
your Week 3 Assignment.
The third section of the paper is the Literature Review (4–6 pages). This is your Week
6 Assignment.
The fourth section of the paper is Causes and Effects (2–3 pages). This is your Week
7 Assignment.
The fifth section of the paper is Problem Solution (2–3 pages). This is your Week 9
Assignment.
The final section is a Conclusion (1 page). You will need to write a conclusion
summarizing the Capstone Project and bringing the paper to a close.
The other assignments you complete for this course are preparation assignments and
are not a part of the final paper. For the final paper, make sure that you incorporate the
feedback that you have received on all assignments and make all needed
corrections. You will need to bridge the sections with transition statements so that the
paper reads as a whole and not several separate papers. Review your citations for
correct APA format throughout.
When completing your final project, be sure to use section headings for each required
part: Introduction, Problem Statement, Literature Review, Causes and Effects, Problem
Solution, Conclusion, and References. All papers need to have a title page. A running
head is optional. Correct APA format is required throughout and for the References
page.

Abstract
This is the abstract, which is typed in block format with no indentation. The abstract briefly
summarizes your paper in 120 words or less. Through your abstract, your readers should be able
to fully understand the content and the implications of the paper. Also, note that writing this
section after the paper itself may be helpful. See section 2.04 APA for tips and more information
on writing abstracts. This template was updated April 25, 2016.

Title of the Paper
This template’s margins, page numbers, and page breaks are set for you, and you do not
need to change them. Do not add any extra spaces between the heading and the text (you may
want to check Spacing under Format, Paragraph in your word processor, and make sure that it is
set to 0”). Instead, just double space as usual, indent a full ½ inch (preferably using the tab
button), and start typing. The introduction should receive no specific heading because readers
assume that the first section functions as your paper’s introduction.
After considering these formatting issues, you will need to construct a thesis statement,
which lets readers know how you synthesized the literature into a treatise that is capable of
advancing a new point of view. This statement provides readers with a lens for understanding the
forthcoming research presented in the body of your essay (after all, each piece of literature
should support and apply to this thesis statement).
Once you have established your thesis, begin constructing the introduction. An easy
template for writing an introduction follows:
1. Start with what has been said or done regarding the topic.
2. Explain the problem with what has been said or done.
3. Offer a solution in a concise thesis statement that can be supported by the literature.
4. Explain how the thesis brings about social change.
Level 1 Heading
This text will be the beginning of the body of the essay. Even though this section has a
new heading, make sure to connect this section to the previous one so readers can follow along
with the ideas and research presented. The first sentence in each paragraph should transition
from the previous paragraph and summarize the main point in the paragraph. Make sure each

paragraph contains only one topic, and when you see yourself drifting to another idea, make sure
you break into a new paragraph. Also, avoid long paragraphs (more than three-fourths of a page)
to help hold readers’ attention; many shorter paragraphs are better than a few long ones. In short,
think this: new idea, new paragraph.
Another Level 1 Heading
Here is another Level 1 heading. Note that, when you add additional headings, you
should use the APA levels available in the Styles area of your toolbar. If you enter them
manually instead, you may need to delete the automatic indent that appears because Word thinks
you are beginning a new paragraph. Again, the topic sentence of this section should explain how
this paragraph is related or a result of what you discussed in the previous section. Consider using
transitions between sentences to help readers see the connections between ideas. Below are a few
examples of how to transition from one statement to another (or in some cases, one piece of
literature to another):
1. Many music teachers at Olson Junior High are concerned about losing their jobs (J.
Thompson, personal communication, July 3, 2013), largely due to the state’s recent
financial cutbacks of fine arts programs (Babar, 2007).
2. Obesity affects as much as 17% of the total population of children, an increase which
may lead to other chronic health problems (Hera, 2008; Sinatra, 2008).
For more examples, see some of the transitions handouts on the Writing Center’s website.
Level 2 Heading
The Level 2 heading designates a subsection of the previous section. Using headings is a
great way to organize a paper and increase its readability, so be sure to review heading rules on
APA 3.02 and 3.03 in order to format them correctly. For shorter papers, using one or two levels

is all that is needed. You would use Level 1 (centered, bold font with both uppercase and
lowercase) and Level 2 (left aligned, bold, both uppercase and lowercase). This template
provides examples of APA’s four heading levels, but remember that at least two headings on the
same level are needed before the next heading level. For example, a paper must have at least two
level 3 headings before a level 4 heading.
Level 3 heading. Note that you should write Level 3 and 4 headings in sentence case,
meaning that only the first word and any proper nouns are capitalized. The number of headings
needed in a particular paper is not set, but longer papers may benefit from another heading level,
such as this Level 3 heading (which is an indented, bold, lowercase paragraph heading).
Level 4 heading. One crucial area in APA is learning how to cite in academic work.
Make sure to cite source information throughout your paper to avoid plagiarism. This practice is
critical: you need to give credit to your sources and avoid copying others’ work at all costs. Look
at APA starting at 6.01 for guidelines on citing source information in your text.
Level 4 heading. You will want to include at least two of each kind of heading in your
paper, hence this additional paragraph modeling effective heading usage. See below for further
tips on using headings effectively.
Level 3 heading. Again, if you choose to use Level 3 or 4 headings, at least two of each
heading level should appear in the paper. Otherwise, if only one heading appears, your readers
may question the need for a heading at all. If you find yourself questioning whether or how to
use headings, consider consulting your instructor or committee chair for his or her input.
Level 1 Heading
APA can seem difficult to master, but following the general rules becomes easier with
use. The Writing Center also offers numerous resources on its website and by email to help.

Level 1 Heading
The conclusion section should recap the major points of your paper. However, perhaps
more importantly, the conclusion should also interpret what you have written and what it means
in the bigger picture. To help write your concluding remarks, consider asking yourself these
questions: What do you want to happen with the information you have provided? What do you
want to change? What is your ultimate goal in using this information? What would it mean if the
suggestions in your paper were taken and used?

Determinants of depression among the black community
The development of mental health conditions is a common phenomenon in the society
where every individual is susceptible to the development of these conditions. African American
individuals have been primarily associated with the development of mental health disorders,
with depression being the most prevalent (Assari & Caldwell, 2018). African American
individuals are 20% time likely to develop mental health problems than the general population.
The increasing rate of depression in African American citizens is mainly because the majority
of African American individuals are highly exposed to factors that increase the risk for mental
health development, which include poverty, exposure to violence, and homelessness (Assari,
Gibbons & Simons, 2018).
There are significant stereotypes that exist within the African American population
regarding depression. People misunderstand mental health conditions, which in most cases, are
ignored. This leads to existing assumptions that mental health conditions are associated with
personal weaknesses and inability to an individual to control their behavior and cognitive
wellbeing. There have also been concerns regarding the reluctance of African American
citizens to discuss mental health, considering that it has been associated with shame and stigma
within the community. The development of these conditions presents a difficult environment
where it is difficult to help in maintaining a clear emphasis on better elements that can help in
improving the level of knowledge on depression within the communities (Amutah-Onukagha
et al., 2017).
The existing challenges within the black community are based on the fact that the
majority of African Americans are found in the lower social class, where they are faced with
major challenges that help in defining their level of development within the society. Therefore
understanding the determinants of depression within the African American will help in defining

better policies that emphasize positive relations within the community as well as policy
formulation to transform the current trend.

Introduction
Major depressive episode is common among African Americans because of the exposure
to different levels of discrimination. Perceived discrimination frustrates African Americans and
makes them unhappy when socializing with other racial groups in America. In the US, African
Americans are believed to be the group with the lowest level in terms of household income,
employment status, and educational status. Low socioeconomic status makes African Americans
look like the inferior group and increases the risk of discrimination. Negative social interaction
causes depression among African Americans. Stress and failure to cope with the demands of
American culture are other factors influencing depression among African Americans. Therefore,
the paper is on resource synthesis and focuses on the topic of depression among African
Americans.
Resource Synthesis
The research by Assari, Lankarani and Caldwell (2018), indicates that socioeconomic
status determines the level of depression among African Americans. Both black males and
females argue that discrimination level among African Americans is high in the US, and urgent
reforms are needed to mitigate against the situation. Depression causes mental illness in African
Americans. More so, depression limits the effort African Americans put in their workplace
environment. Depression influences African Americans to avoid exercising their cultural
practices while with the White Americans. Ideas on superiority and inferiority are spread when
African Americans are depressed due to high discrimination levels in their environment.
According to Bamgbade (2019), African Americans are willing to get intervention for
their depression. Diagnosis of mental illness is an important step that will facilitate recovering

from depression. Depression causes illness in African Americans. Working becomes a challenge
among African Americans after they are depressed with the discrimination issue in their
environment. Attitude and stigma change among depressed African Americans; hence the
causative factors for depression should be handled urgently. The research article associates
depression with unhappiness and sorrow.
The article by Chang (2018), explores different symptoms seen in depressed African
Americans. Both men and women are affected by depression. Chang conducted effective
research to examine the cause of depression among African Americans. Black men and women
stay depressed after considering themselves as less privileged in the society. Failure to meet
basic needs because of lower wages cause depression in African Americans. The symptoms
described in the article on the cause of depression include loneliness and anxiety. Lonely African
Americans students are the ones reported with prevalent cases of depression. The act of African
Americans of viewing themselves as minority increases their risk of getting depressed. African
Americans believe they have individual and personality differences with the whites, and this
contributes to depression.
The research by Chang, Downey, Hirsch and Yu (2018), reveals the steps for treating
depression. African Americans comprise an ethno-racial group, and depression is a
psychological problem affecting their well-being in society. Cognitive-behavioral approaches are
recommended to help black men and women resolve the depression issue. In treating depression,
the cultural values of African Americans are considered. More so, mental health disparities are
considered in an attempt to treat depression. Therapeutic interventions are recommended to help
treat the condition of depression.

Social support, especially from church and family members, will help treat depression among
African Americans. Research by Chatters, Taylor, Woodward and Nicklett (2015), discusses that
serious psychological distress causes depression. Family support will empower individuals
affected with depression to recover from their situation. Depression makes African Americans
lose concentration, remain disturbed, and develop feelings of guilt. Depression is a major health
issue affecting African Americans and is attributed to factors of ethnic and racial discrimination.
Depressed African Americans have diminished thoughts, develop psychomotor agitation, and
lose weight. Handling the problem of depression in African Americans will help reduce fatigue,
feelings of worthlessness, and hypersomnia.
According to Ezra, Griffth, Billy and Altha (2018), depression is a form of a mental issue
affecting the behavior of individuals. Depression is risky for it causes recurrent thoughts of
death. The use of behavioral approaches will help solve the issue of depression in individuals.
Through the cognitive-behavior therapy, the condition of depression reduces in an individual.
Offering the right therapy remains an excellent way to help handle the health issue of depression.
Acupuncture acts as another treatment for depression. More so, depression affects the behavior
of African Americans, for it makes them antisocial in society. In the healthcare setting, the
interests of African Americans are hardly addressed, and this turns stressful to them. The issue of
institutionalized discrimination undermines the value of African Americans. From the article, it
is clear that African Americans are most affected by the psychological problem of depression.
Depression cases have changed the wellbeing of people in African American societies.
Depressed youths begin engaging in deviant behaviors like drug abuse, which are risky to their
health and may result in death.
