it (Chapter 9) on a sheet of paper. Write student name and student ID on top of the paper.
Chapter 9: Information Needed
More impacts are virtually guaranteed to occur in the future. Figure 9.27 shows how often, on
average, we expect Earth to be hit by objects of different sizes, based on geological data from
past impacts. The good news is that we are highly unlikely to be hit by an asteroid as large as the
one that killed the dinosaurs. Impacts of that size occur tens of millions of years apart on
average, which means we face a far greater danger of doing ourselves in than of being done in by
a large asteroid or comet. The bad news is that smaller impacts occur much more frequently.
Objects a few meters across probably enter Earth’s atmosphere every week or so, and objects of
the size that caused the Tunguska event probably strike our planet every couple hundred years or
so. Until we have more closely monitored the skies for potential threats, we cannot discount the
possibility of a very damaging impact.
Figure 9.27: This graph shows that larger objects (asteroids or comets) hit Earth less frequently
than smaller ones. The labels describe the effects of impacts of different sizes.
Figure 9.27 Full Alternative Text Description
Impacts will certainly occur in the future, and some could be large enough to cause significant
damage.
Several efforts to search for potential impact threats are currently under way, though it’s not
clear we could do anything about an impending impact even if we saw it coming. Some people
have proposed schemes to save Earth by using nuclear weapons or other means to demolish or
divert an incoming asteroid, but no one knows whether current technology is really up to the
task. We can only hope that the threat doesn’t become a reality before we’re ready.
