1.Based on the readings for Module 1 (Labor Market), how do you expect the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic to affect employment inequalities in the United States–both during the crisis and once the crisis is over? In your answer, discuss at least 2 forms of employment inequality (i.e., inequality by race, by class, by gender, etc.). Be sure to cite (provide evidence for) your claims based on the readings.

2.Based on the readings for Module 2 (The Family), how do you think the experience of isolating at home during COVID-19 varies within and between families? Within families means how might different members of the same family experience isolation differently? Between families means how might different families experience isolation differently? Be sure to cite (provide evidence for) your claims based on the readings.

3. The culture of poverty theory has been criticized (rightly, in my opinion) as victim blaming and inconsistent with observational research. New scholars of culture are taking a more narrow and nuanced view. Based on the readings for Module 3 (Culture), do you think culture plays an important role in inequality in the United States? Why or why not? If it is important, give two examples of how. Be sure to cite (provide evidence for) your claims based on the readings.

4. The conditions of the neighborhood in which one lives are an important predictor of children’s and adults’ social and economic success in life. For example, you can zoom in on the map at the website below to explore predicted socioeconomic outcomes (and disparities) for individuals in neighborhoods across the United States:

We also know that there are long-standing disparities in neighborhood conditions by race and economic class. Of course, no single change to the social fabric of the United States will fully equalize opportunity and outcomes. Nevertheless, increasing racial and economic integration in neighborhoods is one potential way to promote equity in life chances, although gentrification and neighborhood demographic change are often fraught processes with their own challenges.

In light of this week’s readings (Module 5: Neighborhoods & Housing) and recognizing that neighborhoods have an important effect on individuals’ future outcomes, what do you think our goal(s) as a society should be regarding race and class segregation in neighborhoods? What are the potential pitfalls or challenges we should be considering as we think about neighborhood segregation/integration by race and class?
