Clarence is Rebecca’s elderly grandfather who sometimes drives her to school in the City of Calgary
(Mohkinstsis) when she occasionally misses her bus. On this particular morning, Clarence takes
advantage of this 20-minute commute to teach his teenage granddaughter about her own Blackfoot
culture. Today’s lesson is about the significance of the Honor Song (Ka nai tapi). When they first get in
the car, Rebecca puts on some hip hop music. Her grandfather shuts that off, and instead puts on the
special powwow/honor song on the car stereo. He raises the volume up a little because he has a minor
hearing loss.
As they drive, he explains that the song they are listening to is an ‘Honor’ song. He explains that an
honor song is played for someone who has gained knowledge and this song is sung for them so they can
continue to try (Iiyiikaikimaat). He talks to her about the importance of focusing on her schoolwork, so
that she can achieve success. He shares some experiences from his own childhood and about her
striving for achievement.
At the beginning of the car ride, Rebecca is looking over at her grandfather, nodding to what he says,
and sometimes asking questions. As they get closer to the high school, Rebecca sees a group of her
friends from her basketball team who are waving and yelling something towards Rebecca’s direction.
Rebecca starts to fidget, and looks out the window rather than at her grandfather, no longer nodding or
asking questions. While the music is playing and Clarence is about to explain the significance of the
drums in the Honor Song, Rebecca says to her grandfather, “I’m turning this down,” as she does so while
rolling down her window.
Clarence stops saying anything during the last part of their trip. When they arrive at school, Rebecca
opens the car door and is greeted by her basketball teammates. One of them asks with a smile, “Hey
Rebecca, what music were you listening to? We could hear it from a distance!” Rebecca answers in
hesitation, “Oh… it’s just something that my grandfather likes.”
After Rebecca gets out of the car, Clarence says to her through the open window, “Have a good day.”
Clarence rolls up the window and drives away in tears, leaving Rebecca looking confused with her
friends.
Part A: Case study questions
Answer each of the following questions in approximately 200 words.
1. How is Clarence’s decision of turning the hip hop music off an example of both “enculturation”
and “acculturation” (DeVito et al., 2016, p. 27)? Ensure that the two concepts are explained in
your own words first before you apply them in your answer.
2. Rebecca is developing her self-concept, which according to DeVito et al. (2016) is influenced by
four sources (p. 48). Which of these two sources do you think influence Rebecca’s self-concept
most? Why? Explain and apply the textbook concepts on pp. 48-50 clearly in your answer.
3. Clarence’s feelings are apparently hurt at the end of the case study. Analyze what went wrong in
the communication between Clarence and Rebecca by applying two of the elements of
interpersonal communication on pp. 9-13 in Chapter 1. If you choose metamessages and
feedback messages, this will count as one element as they are both under “Messages.”
4. Imagine that you are Rebecca in the case study. Write a script/dialogue that illustrates a positive
outcome of her communication with Clarence by applying the effective listening strategies in
Chapter 4.
You will be evaluated on your application of the textbook concepts and the quality of the script/dialogue
in your answer to Question 4. That is, the dialogue should reflect your critical understanding of the
miscommunication presented in the case study and your application of the communication skills in
Chapter 4.
Note: If you quote a sentence or a few words from the case study in your answer, include an in-text
citation. For example, “Today’s lesson was about the significance of the Honor Song (Ka nai tapi)”

Part B: Field Study

Think about a time in your life experience where the result of your communication with a person was
negative because of different cultural backgrounds (not because of language barriers). Specifically,
consider how cultural differences played a part in the miscommunication and answer the following:
1. Describe the situation clearly: who was involved? When and where did this take place? What
cultures are you and the other person from? Who said and did what in the interaction? What
was the result of the interaction? Provide specific examples of what went wrong in the
communication. (6 marks, 200 words)
2. Imagine that you have the opportunity to have the same conversation with this person. Write a
script/dialogue with the same conflict you experienced, but this time it has a positive outcome
because of your effective communication with this person. Apply the strategies for improving
intercultural communication that DeVito et al. (2016) provide on pp. 37-45 in your script which
must reflect your critical understanding of the textbook concepts and the application of the
communication skills. (12 marks, 200 words)

example, Mimi was putting on makeup in the video, identify Mimi’s biases and prejudices, mental
distractions, lack of appropriate focus, and premature judgment. Give specific examples of these four
listening barriers in your response.
In Part 2, apply techniques of active listening as if you were Mimi when Helen shared her concerns. First,
Helen was worried about someone complaining about her eating hard boiled eggs at work every
morning. For this concern, demonstrate active listening by expressing understanding of Helen’s feelings.
Second, Helen was worried about not being liked at work. Demonstrate active listening by asking Helen
at least two questions about her concern to show support. Third, Helen was worried about her noisy
neighbors upstairs. For this concern, demonstrate active listening by paraphrasing what Helen said
about her neighbors.
In Part 2 of your video response, I want you to really demonstrate the three active listening techniques.
Show these active listening techniques as if you were Mimi. Act it out!
