Project #3: Formal research-based project. Students will pick a research topic or question and write a
three item annotated bibliography. Students will then write an argumentative research paper that
uses the references from the annotated bibliography. The argumentative research paper is 4
pages.
Formatting Policy
All work should be formatted using standard MLA guidelines: 1 inch margins all around, 12
point Times New Roman font, double spacing, the author’s last name and page number in the
header of the document at the right-hand margin, with a title of the author’s own creation, and
with the author’s name, class name, instructor’s name, and date single-spaced on the top of the
first page only at the left-hand margin. Further, there should be NO extra space between
paragraphs. Much of this may require you to change the default settings on your word processing
program—font, margins, and spacing between paragraphs especially. Any work that does not
follow these guidelines will be subject to a reduction in points.
March 30 – April 3: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY WEEK. Having picked your topic and
your argument, it is time to start reading articles about your topic. Please submit your THREE
entry annotated bibliography by Friday, April 3. Remember that an annotated bibliography is
merely the citation for the source followed by a two or three sentence summary of the source.
For an example, I have given you an annotated bibliography that I made. You can also look to
From Inquiry to Academic Writing. As for which citation style you should use, I prefer MLA, but
you can pick whichever you prefer. The Purdue OWL website is an invaluable source for citation
help.
April 6 – April 10: THESIS STATEMENT WORKSHOP WEEK. For this week, you will write
your proposed thesis statement for your argumentative research paper and submit it to me by
Tuesday, April 7 at 5:00pm. I will then put you in groups of three and have you workshop each
other’s thesis statements. Once you have received your feedback, you can rewrite your thesis
statement and send it to me by Friday, April 10, at which time I will read and give you feedback
on your thesis statement. Please also read about thesis statements in From Inquiry to Academic
Writing.
April 13 – April 17: THREE PARAGRAPHS & USING SOURCES WEEK. For this week, you
will write three body paragraphs that might appear in your final paper, none of which should be
your introduction (remember that introductions should be written last so you know what you’re
introducing). In at least one of these paragraphs, you should use a quote from one of your
sources. In writing these paragraphs, please read the section on paragraphing in From Inquiry to
Academic Writing and the section on using quotes. By Friday, April 17, please submit these three
paragraphs. I will get feedback to you on your paragraphing and your use of quotes.
April 20 – April 24: PEER REVIEW WEEK. By Wednesday, April 22 at 1:00pm, please submit
whatever you have of your paper at this point. This will serve as your rough draft for peer
review. I will then break you into groups, send you your group’s papers, and you can give each
other feedback.
April 27 – May 1: INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS. By Wednesday, April 29, please submit to me
whatever you have of your paper at this point. This will serve as your rough draft for instructor
comments. I will get you these comments by Friday, May 1.
May 4 – May 8: REVISION. On Monday, May 4, I will send you various revision exercises that
you can use to make your papers even stronger. You can also read the revision section of From
Inquiry to Academic Writing.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (3 entries)
Due Dates: Friday, April 3
Resources:
You can reference all of the readings we’ve completed this semester. You should apply the skills
we’ve learned about to the work of writing your research paper. For this annotated bibliography,
you must also include 3 sources that you’ve found on your own that are relevant to your topic.
Situation:
During the semester we’ve traced the development of genre theory in film as a means of
amalgamation and expression. We’ve talked about different points of view on the subject, the
kinds of studies being done in this area, the connections between the topic and various academic
disciplines, but in the end we’ve talked about how you can add to any particular discourse. Now
it’s your turn to enter the conversation. Doing the annotated bibliography will give you a better
sense of the research surrounding your topic and will lay the groundwork for the evidence you
will use in the paper.
Task:
You will write an annotated bibliography of 3 sources. Each source should include a 2-4
sentence description that will give the overall argument, the significance of the source, and how it
will be helpful to your inquiry.
WRITING PROJECT # 3: DOCUMENTED RESEARCH PAPER (4 PAGES)
Due Dates: Wednesday, April 22 by 1:00pm (rough draft)
Wednesday, April 29 (draft for instructor comments)
Friday, May 15 by 4:00pm (final due date)

Essentially, all of the texts that we have read in the course have been preparing you to write your
documented research paper. Consult From Inquiry to Academic Writing for intellectual strategies
to guide your inquiry.
Situation:
The goal of your writing a documented research paper is for you to become more familiar with a
specific topic, while engaging with the ongoing conversation/debate that surrounds your point of
interest. Your task is to specialize your knowledge towards your chosen inquiry and take a
distinct position based on your research.
Task:
The research paper requires you to formulate a specific argument based on the general issues
dealing with your topic. It is your choice as to the direction your research goes, but it is necessary
that you formulate your own original claim that brings your insight into the ongoing discussion.
As you work to formulate your claim, try to draw on your own unique knowledge as a citizen of
certain kinds of communities and as a person with expertise in your major academic area. Your
argument must be clear and central to your paper, and you must address other critical sources that
either further develop or complicate your inquiry. In your research paper, you will use all the
skills learned from summary, analysis, and synthesis. The research paper is essentially a synthesis
paper in which you draw your claim from a larger field of knowledge and where you must have
conducted extensive research about your topic.
Sources, Documentation, and Format:
• Include a minimum of three credible sources which are relevant to your inquiry.
• You must cite each of your sources at least once in the body of your paper.
• In addition to your three sources, try to include your own original research on your topic.
This could include interviews, surveys, and/or ethnographic observations.
• Follow MLA format (or whichever citation format you choose). It must be typed, doublespaced with one-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman font.
• Include in-text documentation and a complete works cited page, which acknowledges all
sources used in your paper.
