How to Do Nothing Annotations/Reading Notes Assignment
This annotations assignment differs from your first annotations assignment in two ways:

Everyone will read their own copy of the book. I have posted a free ebook copy on
Canvas. You can download and read this copy using any number of eReaders and free
apps, including Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Google Play Books. You are also welcome to
order a hard copy version of the book––at your own expense––if you would prefer to
read a physical copy.
•
Instead of annotating the book in the margins, please transcribe your annotations/reading
notes in a Word doc. organized by chapter, and include the page number to which the
annotation refers.
For example
p. 23: Smith makes the compelling claim that hot dogs are not sandwiches, citing Jones’
four-point test for a legitimate sandwich. Under such a test, many sandwich-like items
(e.g., Oreos) lose their ‘sandwich’ status, thereby narrowing the definition of the term
considerably. The purpose of this narrowing, according to Smith, is to maintain the
integrity and legacy of the sandwich. As smith says, “If everything can be a sandwich,
then nothing can be a sandwich––and that’s not a world I want to live in.”
Minimum Requirements:
•
At least 4 original annotations per chapter (be sure to include the Introduction &
Conclusion; you may exclude the Preface and Acknowledgements)
•
One 2-3-sentence summary of each chapter
Evaluation:
Annotations will be evaluated on completeness (i.e., do the annotations satisfy the basic
requirement outlined above?) and quality (i.e., do the annotations consist of a mix of questions
and comments that demonstrate close engagement with the text?)
