“Cora Unashamed” Assignment
Please answer the following question in a two-paragraph reflection on the short story “Cora Unashamed” by Langston Hughes:
What do you think Langston Hughes is saying about gender in “Cora Unashamed”? In other words, what inferences can you make about Hughes’ thoughts regarding the lives of Black women in the 1920s in the United States?
Please keep in mind that Hughes takes on the still controversial topic of abortion in this story. Remember that when this story was written abortion was illegal and women died from having illegal abortions. We don’t have a lot of literature that deals with abortion in general and even less written by men.
