Your
research paper should seek to explain either (1) why the war started or (2) why the war ended. It may be
the case that different combatants had different reasons for starting or ending the war, so I will
accept papers framed around just one of the involved states if you prefer. Importantly, you should
seek to test at least two theories for war onset or termination: your preferred argument and at least
one alternative. The alternative argument must either derive from well-established theories about
war (e.g., Jervis’s spiral model) or, preferably, have been made by a credible scholar about the war in
question. (A credibly scholarly argument might be something found in a book or journal article. If in
doubt, ask me.) My goal is for you to compare your argument to something other than a “straw
man.”
The papers must include (1) a clearly stated argument, (2) a clearly stated alternative argument (or
arguments), (3) a literature review that situates (1) and (2), (4) a description of how the arguments
will be evaluated empirically, and (5) an evaluation of the arguments using evidence from primary
and secondary sources
