Use the following information to create an illustration of the process of gene expression for your topic. You may create this digitally or on paper. Please remember that this needs to be an illustration, so you should have pictures/drawings that are doing most of the explaining – not simply a bunch of text on a page.
Your illustration should show the following criteria:
The name of the gene and its location in the cell (hint: where in all cells do we find genes?)
The mutation that occurs, labeled with the type of mutation (review mutation types from Gene Expression and Mutations or p. 580-581)
The mRNA that is transcribed and its location in the cell (hint: where does mRNA go to for translation?)
The important components (molecules, organelles) of translation and their locations in the cell
The amino acid sequence of the product of translation
A description of how the mutation affects the organism
If you are studying jaguar coloration or insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, you have been provided the DNA sequence and will be able to work through the steps in order. If you are studying geese at high altitude, you have been given the protein sequence and will work backward to a DNA sequence. Note that because there is more than one codon sequence for some amino acids, you may come up with a different sequence from other students working on this topic
