Preliminaries:

In this hypothetical exericse, you are going to look at two tools that might be included in your medical practice’s CDS ecosystem:

Medscape Drug Interactions Checker at https://reference.medscape.com/drug-interactionchecker (Links to an external site.)
In EPSS, you will perform a check for recommended medical tests and procedures for both a male and a female 16 year old just as a clinician may do during a real office visit. Make note of some of the differences in recommendations between the two genders as well as between sexually active teenagers and those who are not.

In Medscape, you will check a set of drug interactions to ensure there are no conflicts that may affect your patient. Interrogate the interactions in the following order:

atorvastatin (for high cholesterol) and metformin (for diabetes)
add lisinopril (for high blood pressure)
add st. john’s wort (as many people believe this non-FDA approved supplement helps brain function)
if there is another supplement that you or someone you know takes, you may want to check its interactions as well.
By Day 6 (Saturday):

Post in the Discussion Forum, using a meaningful subject line, the following:

In your first paragraph, a summary of the differences you observed in the recommended tests provided through EPSS.
Discuss the implications of these differences in terms of gender. In particular, what do these variations in the recommendations potentially indicate about overall health care issues and gender.
In your second paragraph, a summary of the interactions observed between the various drugs in the Medscape interaction checker.
Given what you observed in the interactions, what advice would you give to your friends and family about reporting the use of all drugs and supplements to medical providers?
In your third paragraph, a recommendation on whether to include one or both tools in your CDS ecosystem. Be specific in providing a justification for how these tools will be useful in a clinical care environment.
