Respond to 2 classmates – In your responses, consider their answers. Do you agree? Why or why not? Please explain why you agree or disagree with supporting evidence to your claim. Responses need to be 75 words minimum. Respond to this 1st – The law that I chose for my post today is Boyle’s Law. Boyle’s Law states that the pressure of a gas sample, depends in part, on its volume. This law applies to many many everyday situations like breathing and air bubbles in water, but the every day situation I’ve chosen to focus on is pumping up a tire. A few nights ago, I was getting ready to take my son on a walk when I noticed that the tires on his stroller were a little bit low. Luckily, I had a tire pump in my garage that I was able to use to fill up the tires with air so we could still go on our walk. At the time I didn’t realize it, but I was witnessing Boyle’s Law in action! When I pushed down the handle of my tire pump, it increased the pressure of the gas inside, which forced pressurized gas into the tire of my stroller. I repeated this action until my tires were full. The pressure increased because there was a decrease in volume in the container that holds the air in the pump. This is because as the volume decreases, the same number of gas particles crowded a smaller space which caused more collisions of molecules against the walls of the container. After seeing, this gas law in action, I can see how many gas laws affect our every day life without us even really realizing it. Respond to this 2nd – The situation I immediately thought of when thinking about gases is a hot air balloon. Unfortunately I have never been in a hot air balloon, but I have seen them in real life and in movies and I know they are powered by fire and therefore gas. Charles law states that the volume of an ideal gas at constant pressure is directly proportional to the absolute temperature. In other words the volume of a gas equals a constant multiplied by its temperature. This is related to how hot air balloons work because gas expands when it is heated and therefore a given weight of hot air will have a larger volume than if the air was cold (such as the air around it). Once the air in the balloon is hot enough, the weight of the balloon plus the hot air is less than the volume of the cold air around it and therefore it will begin to rise. When the temperature increases, so does the volume of gas, which in this case is air, and that is stated in Charles law. When you want the balloon to come down, you decrease the fire, and therefore heat, which decreases the volume as well.
