Write a paper on the following topic:
Pretend you are the inventor of a special new robot. This robot can survive and learn on its own, even when you are not there to help it. It can answer questions just like a person. And it even says that it loves you and that it misses you when you are not home. Now imagine that the government passes a law outlawing robots like yours. They claim that such robots have no minds—they are just machines and they will all be destroyed!
In this paper, pretend that you are the defense lawyer for your robot and you HAVE to defend it, even if you’re not sure it has a mind. How would you prove to the jury that your robot has a mind and so has the right not to be destroyed? Sketch out the imaginary trial scenario described above and then present TWO separate arguments you would give to defend your robot. (In your paper, please label your arguments “argument 1” and “argument 2,” so they are easy to find.) Be sure to bring in issue we’ve discussed all semester about humans, machines, animals, and minds!
