Tone in Nilda by Junto Diaz

Writing styles for authors are conveyed through attributes that influence the objectives of the specific piece. In this light, the tones and personalities of writing styles help in developing characters of a book, play or novel. Literature confirms that a writer describes subjects or audiences through tonal variations that bright out the attitudes and feelings of readers and characters of the book. The writer in different forms characterizes tones in Nilda by Junto Diaz.

Expressive

According to Ambio’s reviews, Yunior has expressed an alter ego, which makes part of the character in the book. Yunior first appears at Diaz’s debut collection for the short stories. In the development and growth of Yunior, feelings of expressiveness and self-awareness are manifested throughout the stories. Various conflicting issues suggest the growth of Yunior in according to Diaz and Ambio. In the reviews, self-awareness influences trust and understanding of alter ego for Yunior by developing holistic attributes. Such feelings come with the independence of the character, which is autonomous and expressive in boosting self-esteem and awareness.

 

Narrative

Diaz’s short stories influence narrations that focus on the art of storytelling which signifies the narrative approach used in the books. Also, any time that Diaz concentrates on storytelling, there is a deep silence which affects the mentality of the reader based on a particular event. Besides, the factual and fictional aspects of narratives bring about the tonal variations and feelings of the short stories. The short stories, for example, on Nilda, are told in the first person (Sonny & Lukashuk 320).

Sarcasm

Sarcasm is the literary style as well as the device intended to mock the remarks of the writer with the deliberation of entertaining readers. Through the narrator Yunior, Diaz confirms publicly through sarcasm about racism as well as desires of the white man within the Dominican Republic. Also, through political platforms, there was an idea of White Dominican man as well as people that repressed immigrants of Haiti within the Dominican that led to persecution or homicide. Sarcastically, Dominican Republic blames foreigners for the rise in racism which they create at a personal level. Specifically, Haitians are accused of racism that leads to them being persecuted and killing ( Marin 2). Sarcasm influences more focus on the understanding that is portrayed in Diaz’s Nilda, through the attributes of life’s experiences that are intended.

Through the literature of Junot, Dominican Republic is represented using the protagonists to the United States. Junot uses sarcasm to bring out the present or past through the different spaces of geography. Also, the cultures of Spain and the United States influence the two languages that bring out sarcasm. Dominican foods, thoughts, styles and cultural backgrounds affect the sarcasm from Nilda’s story by Diaz.

Fiction

“González’s thorough exploration of narrative elements in Díaz’s works demonstrates how character narrators shape the fictive worlds they inhabit and that critical perspective is enriched when Díaz’s production is considered as a whole. In effect, González’s comprehensive study highlights that Yunior, the Afro-Dominican character narrator most often employed in Díaz’s writings, is his “greatest achievement to date” (156),” (306).

Yunior, who made an appearance for the first time in the debut of Diaz’s collection. Diaz is rigid, loves books and is a young boy who is exposed more to the traditional backgrounds of the Dominican Republic. Also, the stories express an immigrant in the United States has to suffer for the sake of adopting into surroundings. Lorraine observes that  This Is How You Lose Her, shows the fictional approach on how Diaz is a grown man, who is a teacher from Boston and struggles with several issues like failed relationships, estranged mother, a brother that is dead, as well as the regular racism that occurs daily (120).

Threatening

The story of Nilda is among the short stories written by Junot in his literary works. Nilda brings out a threatening situation when she desires to open home like a rescue center where or a group for the children that run away from home as she did. Nilda is the girlfriend to Rafa, who happens to be Yunior’s brother. Nilda feels threatened because she avoids her mother, who is an alcoholic, leading to the development of their friendship with Yunior.

Emotional Development

Diaz evaluates the complexity of the development of emotions in This is How You Lose Her that portrays Yunior’s feelings. The character narrator expressed in Nilda influences self-awareness. With the absence of Yunior in the short stories from his boyhood to adulthood, Diaz reveals draining of emotions in the stories. Yunior’s relationship has been shaped through the emotional development by the father(Lorraine 120).

In conclusion, tonal variations in literature bring out the styles that influence the thoughts and ideas of the writer. Besides, the varieties have a difference in the significance of the tonal languages that have tonality. In writing, tones influence the adaptation and changes that affect the readers through different situations. Through the choices of words, tonal variations are portrayed. Both informal and formal differences bring out a tone in writing that the writer intended to initiate. Readers relate more to the feelings and emotions of the writers through their pieces of literature that are expressive in several ways.

Marissa states that Gonzalez uses an analytical approach that departs from ideologically oriented scholarship; thus, most of his findings elucidate the literary qualities of Diaz writing.  Second, Ambio review Gonzalez’s analysis of “This How You Lose Her,” which encompasses Nilda’s short story.
