First, read or review course materials on the sociological imagination, including the textbook and lecture notes. Pay particular attention to the lecture note titled “The Sociological Imagination”—which contains an important excerpt from C. Wright Mills’ book on the topic—and the following note titled “An Emphasis on Social Factors.”
Second, write a post that addresses all of the following points.
o What is the sociological imagination? Describe it in your own words.
o In the excerpt, Mills claims that the sociological imagination involves thinking about how personal “troubles” are related to public or social “issues.” Give an example by describing a personal trouble someone might have and how it could be caused by one or more relevant social issues. (Please avoid the examples in the readings, such as unemployment, divorce, and the Great Recession—choose something different.)
o How do you like your analysis? What are the advantages of viewing your example in terms of social issues and not just individual ones? Are there disadvantages as well?
Guidelines for your main post: Aim for at least one lengthy paragraph, written in complete sentences (essay style) rather than bullet points or lists.
The subject line post should be related to your example (e.g., “Poverty” or “Social anxiety”).
