Construct a cogent argument either for or against allowing almost any type of animal to be an Emotional Support Animal (ESA). There will be at least 4 sub-conclusions in your argument, as well as the overall conclusion stated above. We suggest you include a total of around 15-20 statements.
1. [5 marks] Present your cogent argument about ESAs.
Write your argument in standard form. Do not suppress any premises. Identify which statements support each (sub-)conclusion using the (P1+P2+C3) notation.3.
2.[3 marks] Describe two reasoning gaps in the argument in Q1. As your argument should be cogent, they won’t be reasoning errors (e.g. fallacies). If you find any reasoning errors, improve your Q1 answer by repairing your argument.
Note: psychological biases and assumptions are problems with people, not arguments. False premises are not reasoning gaps.
3. [2 mark] List two undermining premises that could be added to the argument in Q1. For each, say which sub-argument it undermines, and explain how. The undermining statements must be acceptable/true, and relevant. Do not include the argument from Q1.
4. [2 marks] Write a cogent analogical argument on ESAs. It must have an opposite conclusion to that you argued for in Q1. Use the Standard Form for Analogical Arguments.
Hint: The way to maximise cogency is to be very careful in selecting your analogy, as the argument strength comes from the lists of relevant Similarities and Differences in your analogy.
